How to Care for Your Rubio Monocoat Finished Live Edge Table
You've invested in a premium custom live edge table finished with Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C Pure — a plant-based hardwax oil designed to protect and enhance the wood for generations. The good news? With the right daily habits and occasional refreshing, this finish delivers lasting beauty and performance with minimal effort. No messy re-sanding or frequent re-coating required.
As the craftsman who builds and finishes every table in my Valley Center workshop, this is the exact care routine I recommend — the same guidance included in the maintenance flyer that ships with every piece.

What Your Table Can Handle
Your table is built for real life and daily enjoyment:
Daily use — Meant to be used and enjoyed.
Spills — Liquids bead up; wipe immediately with a soft, dry cloth.
Warm dishes — Coffee cups, dinner plates, and warm serving dishes are generally fine.
Hot cookware — Always use trivets for items straight from the stove or oven.
Small dents, dings, and scratches are natural over time and add character — just like a fine leather product.
The 3 Enemies of Live Edge Tables
Extreme Temperature Changes Avoid direct heating vents, fireplaces, or rapid temperature swings. These can cause wood to warp, cup, crack, or split. In dry periods (such as during Santa Ana winds), use a humidifier to maintain stable humidity.
Direct Sunlight Avoid placing your table in direct sunlight or near uncovered windows. UV exposure can fade the wood tone and dry out the finish over time. Consider UV-blocking window treatments if needed.
Direct or Prolonged Moisture Wipe up all spills immediately. Avoid standing water, excessive moisture, or outdoor exposure without protection. While the finish is water-resistant, no wood finish is 100% waterproof. Prolonged moisture can penetrate the wood.
Daily Cleaning & Care
Keeping your table clean is the foundation of proper care. Dust and vacuum regularly to remove grit and dirt — this simple step protects the finish more than anything else.
You have two good options:
A lightly damp (not dripping wet) cloth with clean water works for everyday wiping. Remember: wood and water don't mix well. Avoid daily wet cleaning.
Recommended: Use Rubio Monocoat Surface Care Spray (ready-to-use) or properly diluted Universal Soap. These remove dirt and grease effectively without leaving residue or affecting the natural matte look of the finish.
Mixing Universal Soap: Use a 1:100 ratio (for example, 1.3 fl oz per gallon of water). Spray or wipe with a microfiber cloth or soft rag.

Periodic Maintenance: Every 2–6 Years (or When Your Table Tells You)
Even the best oil finishes benefit from occasional refreshing. Depending on use and climate, you'll typically want to refresh the surface every 2 to 6 years (more often on high-traffic areas like tabletops).
My go-to product: Rubio Monocoat Renew. It restores and protects the finish, bringing it back to a fresh, nourished state. Apply Renew to any areas that start to look or feel dry, rough, or where liquids no longer bead up nicely. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe off excess. It's perfect for spot maintenance on dining tables.
For a slightly higher sheen (a soft velvet look), you can use Universal Maintenance Oil instead.
If the finish ever becomes heavily worn or you want to restore a specific area completely, a light cleaning followed by a spot application of Oil Plus 2C Pure will bring it back to new. No full sanding is usually required.

Five Signs Your Table Needs Attention Now
Your table tells you when it needs refreshing — don't rely solely on the calendar. Watch for these visual cues:
Dull or flat appearance — Fresh finish has subtle depth; flat, chalky wood needs attention.
Dry or rough texture — Well-cared-for wood feels smooth; roughness means worn protection.
Water doesn't bead — Test with a few drops; if it spreads instead of beading, refresh the surface.
Visible stains or rings — Glass rings or marks that won't wipe away signal the finish needs help.
Color fading or uneven tone — UV exposure causes this; proper care restores richness.
If you see any of these, refresh with Renew (or the appropriate product) immediately.
How to Apply Rubio Monocoat Renew or Universal Maintenance Oil
Proper application takes just 15 minutes and protects your table for years. A little goes a long way.
What You'll Need:
Clean, soft cloths (microfiber or blue shop towels work great)
Optional: Mild soap and water for sticky spots
Steps:
Clean the surface — Wipe the entire table with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. For sticky spots, use a barely damp cloth (with or without mild soap), then dry thoroughly. Never apply product to a dirty or wet surface.
Apply a thin coat — Pour a small amount onto a clean cloth. Work in sections, applying with circular motions and firm pressure. You're working it into the wood, not just wiping it on.
Let it absorb — For Renew: a few minutes. For Maintenance Oil: about 5 minutes. The wood may darken slightly as it absorbs. Don't rush this.
Buff and remove excess — Use a clean, dry cloth to buff in circular motions for 2–3 minutes per section. Remove all excess oil — any left on the surface will feel sticky and attract dust.
Final check — The surface should have a uniform sheen with no dull patches or glossy wet spots. Let the table sit 1–2 hours before heavy use. It should feel dry to the touch.
Pro tip: Treat the legs and base too — they need the same protection as the top.
Stain Removal
For spills or marks, always wipe up liquids immediately.
Dark/black spots (tannin stains from metal, pots, etc.): Use Tannin Remover Spray.
White/cloudy rings (typically from moisture on an uncured finish): Start with Rubio Monocoat Renew — this often resolves the issue. If needed, perform a light renovation: Gently abrade the area with a maroon pad, clean off the dust, and reapply a thin layer of Oil Plus 2C Pure.
Always follow the product instructions, then clean the whole surface and refresh as needed.
Outdoor Furniture (If Applicable)
Outdoor pieces are finished with a UV inhibitor to slow — but not prevent — natural weathering. Direct exposure to sun, rain, and snow will accelerate weathering.
Cover with a table cover when not in use.
Protect under shade structures, overhangs, or covered patios.
Expect some cracking and color fading over time (this is natural for outdoor wood).
