Where to Buy an Extra-Large Live Edge Dining Table in California

Finding a beautiful live edge dining table is relatively easy. Finding someone who specializes in building exceptionally large tables from rare, premium wood slabs is an entirely different challenge.

If you're searching for a 12-foot, 16-foot, 20-foot or larger live edge dining table, the builder you choose matters just as much as the wood itself.

At these dimensions, sourcing exceptional material, properly preparing the slab, engineering the base and coordinating delivery all require specialized experience.

I'm Kristopher Kirkpatrick, owner of Kristopher Kirkpatrick Custom Furniture, located in Valley Center, California, in San Diego County.

I specialize in designing and building large and extra-large custom live edge dining and conference tables, particularly from premium Claro walnut and Bastogne walnut slabs.

My work includes residential and commercial commissions throughout California and nationwide, including an approximately 25-foot Claro walnut table built for a residence in the Hamptons.

If you're considering commissioning an oversized table, here's what to look for—and how the process works.

Where Can You Buy an Extra-Large Live Edge Table in California?

For an unusually large table, I recommend working directly with a custom furniture maker who has experience sourcing and fabricating oversized solid-wood slabs.

Traditional furniture retailers generally offer predetermined dimensions, species and base designs.

A custom commission allows the table to be designed around your specific room, seating requirements and preferred material.

At Kristopher Kirkpatrick Custom Furniture, I work with clients throughout:

  • San Diego County

  • Orange County

  • Los Angeles

  • Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley

  • Northern California

  • Other locations throughout the United States

Each table is designed around the project rather than selected from a fixed inventory of finished furniture.

For exceptionally large commissions, that often begins with sourcing the right slab.

Why Extra-Large Live Edge Tables Require a Specialist

Building an eight-foot dining table and building a 20-foot dining table involve many of the same woodworking principles.

But the challenges increase significantly with size.

A massive tabletop can weigh hundreds of pounds. The material may require specialized equipment for surfacing and handling. The base must provide adequate structural support while allowing for natural wood movement.

Delivery can also become a major consideration.

A table that's 16 or 20 feet long may require special transportation, access planning or on-site assembly.

These details need to be considered before construction begins.

When evaluating a furniture maker, I recommend asking whether they have completed projects of comparable size and whether their workshop can accommodate the material required.

Experience with oversized slabs matters.

The Importance of Access to Premium Wood Slabs

One of the biggest differences between conventional furniture and extraordinary large-format work is access to material.

Finding an attractive eight-foot walnut slab is one thing.

Finding a 16-foot slab that's exceptionally wide, properly dried, structurally suitable and visually remarkable is considerably more difficult.

I've spent years developing relationships with premium hardwood suppliers throughout California and the Pacific Northwest.

These relationships allow me to source unusual pieces of Claro walnut, Bastogne walnut, white oak and other exceptional hardwoods.

For clients looking for a one-of-a-kind table, I believe selecting the individual slab is one of the most important parts of the process.

Rather than choosing a generic wood species and hoping the finished table looks impressive, we can evaluate actual slabs for their dimensions, figure, coloration and natural character.

Claro Walnut: A Favorite for Large Statement Tables

Claro walnut is one of my specialties.

Exceptional slabs can display deep chocolate coloration, curl, contrasting grain and extraordinary natural figure.

In a large dining room, a highly figured Claro walnut table can become the architectural centerpiece of the space.

This is particularly true when the table is made from one exceptional slab with uninterrupted grain.

No two pieces are identical.

For clients seeking a dramatic statement piece, a large Claro walnut live edge dining table is one of my favorite recommendations.

Bastogne Walnut for Extra-Large Tables

Bastogne walnut is another exceptional material for large custom furniture.

Certain slabs display rich brown heartwood, lighter natural edges and highly figured grain.

Both Claro and Bastogne walnut can produce extraordinary dining and conference tables.

I don't consider one universally better than the other.

The right choice depends on the individual slab, the desired dimensions and the architecture of the room.

For especially large projects, availability may also influence the decision.

Single-Slab vs. Multi-Slab Dining Tables

Many clients initially contact me looking for a single-slab live edge dining table.

I understand the appeal.

A single slab preserves the continuous grain and natural character of one section of a tree.

At 12, 14 or 16 feet long, that can create a remarkable piece of furniture.

However, exceptional single slabs become increasingly difficult to source as dimensions increase.

For certain projects, a carefully designed bookmatched or multi-slab tabletop may be more appropriate.

Both approaches can create beautiful furniture.

The important thing is choosing a construction method that complements the available material and the intended design.

How Much Does an Extra-Large Live Edge Dining Table Cost?

The cost of a large custom table depends on several factors, including the species, dimensions, rarity of the slab, figure, base design, fabrication requirements and delivery.

An extraordinary 16-foot single slab of highly figured Claro walnut is a different investment from a more readily available multi-piece tabletop of similar dimensions.

For that reason, I don't price every table using a fixed cost per linear foot.

Instead, I provide project-specific pricing based on the actual material and design.

For clients researching the investment, I've also written a separate article explaining what determines the cost of a large custom live edge walnut table.

How Large Can a Custom Dining Table Be?

There isn't one universal maximum size.

The practical limits depend on the available material, room dimensions, structural requirements and installation access.

I've worked on projects ranging from conventional residential dining tables to extraordinary commissions approaching 25 feet in length.

One of my most substantial projects was an approximately 25-foot Claro walnut table built for a residence in the Hamptons.

At that scale, the table becomes much more than a conventional piece of furniture.

Sourcing, fabrication, transportation and installation all become significant parts of the project.

The Hamptons installation even required crane coordination.

Projects like this demonstrate what's possible when the right material, equipment and planning come together.

Can You Order a Custom Live Edge Table From Outside San Diego?

Absolutely.

Although my workshop is located in Valley Center, California, I build custom tables for clients throughout Southern California and nationwide.

For projects outside the immediate area, I can coordinate appropriate crating, freight and delivery arrangements.

The specific transportation plan depends on the size, weight, construction and destination of the finished table.

For especially large commissions, delivery considerations are incorporated into the design process from the beginning.

This allows clients outside San Diego to commission exceptional custom furniture without being limited to builders in their immediate area.

How to Commission an Extra-Large Live Edge Table

The process begins with a conversation about the room and the type of table you envision.

I generally ask clients for their desired dimensions, seating capacity, preferred wood species, project location and any available photographs or architectural plans.

From there, we can evaluate suitable slabs and develop the design.

The process typically includes:

  1. Discussing the project and intended use

  2. Determining appropriate table dimensions

  3. Selecting the individual wood slab or slabs

  4. Designing the tabletop and base

  5. Preparing and fabricating the material

  6. Finishing the table

  7. Coordinating delivery and installation

For especially large projects, the design and logistics may require additional planning.

The goal is always to create a table that complements the architecture, functions properly and showcases the natural beauty of the material.
